Inspiring Change for International Women’s Day 2014

Heather and Eva

Those who know me will be aware that I’m a ‘make it happen’ kind of a woman and that is certainly true of my most recent ‘great idea’.

Having realised that International Women’s Day (IWD) was fast approaching, and being unable to find any events taking place in Oswestry to mark the day, I decided to take the bull by the horns and, instead of complaining that nothing was happening, set about organising something myself.

I spoke to my friend and colleague Eva Hill of Worklifebetter (we provide coaching and training together under the umbrella of Momentum Shropshire) to see if she would like to help get something ‘off the ground’.  Being the kind of woman she is, Eva said yes (I knew she would) and so our idea was born.

We approached Walford and North Shropshire College who kindly agreed to host the event and then set to work planning, scheming and promoting.

This year’s theme for IWD is ‘Inspiring Change’ and we both want to use this opportunity not only to celebrate the great difference that women have made in the world, but to recognise that we have the power to inspire change in future generations.

The morning session which runs from 10am to 12noon on Friday 7th March will see me sharing the story of how a woman who inspired me at an early age went on to be recognised for her tireless work overseas when she received the MBE in 2011. From her ability to motivate me, I have achieved some great things in my life and try to pay forward the same inspiration to others.

There will also be activities during which we will harness the experiences of women in the room to make a difference to our own lives and those of future generations.

Women of all ages and nationalities are welcome. Mothers, daughters, sisters and cousins will be greeted with open arms and friendships are certain to be formed.”

The event runs from 10am to 12noon on Friday March 7th and is followed by an optional 2 course buffet lunch served in the college restaurant. Tickets cost just £7.50 for the meeting (to include drinks) and lunch is available for an additional £12.50.

I’m thrilled to be running this comedy workshop for 10-14yr olds at Oswestry Library later this month.

Aimed at youngsters who want to develop their confidence and their communication skills to give them an edge as they grow and move into the big wide world this afternoon session is guaranteed to be fun, funny and give them some tips to start developing their own communication style and enhance their listening skills too.

The session leads into our regular fortnightly Speak Easy Club that meets after school at the library every other Tuesday and focuses on the same skill set but in a more structured format. Mind you, we still have fun.

So, why not send your son or daughter along to find out more and share in the fun?

If you would like to find out more beforehand, please feel free to contact me on 01691 700800.

This year sees the 5th Annual Food and Drink Festival come to Oswestry.

On Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July the town centre will be alive with food stalls, live music and children’s activities.

The festival gets started on Friday 8th July with Pasta Mania at Upstairs Downstairs on Leg Street from 10am to 4pm, followed by a lively public debate on food issues, chaired by John Vidal, Environmental Editor for the Guardian which takes place at the Memorial Hall from 7.30pm.

The weekend gets into full swing on Saturday with stalls popping up in New Street, Bailey Street and Cross Street with the Market Hall and local shops hosting a range activities to entertain and delight.

With plentiful sampling to be had and even a bit of dancing in the Memorial Hall scheduled for Sunday afternoon, there’s something for everyone in Oswestry this weekend.
